Volunteers are the heart of AIDS Action.  Here's how to get started:

Volunteer Spotlight:  Hotlines Program Volunteers 
Join our Hotline team and help respond to some of the 1,000 calls we field each month with confidential information, support and referrals about HIV, Hepatitis and STDs.  This includes talking about risks, testing options, and treatment decisions. The Hotline is a meaningful way to empower people to make healthy decisions in their lives, and volunteers work in a fun and supportive team atmosphere.   We're seeking volunteers able to devote one consistent weekday morning or afternoon per week to volunteering.  Ideal for people who work shifts or weekends, or who make their own schedule.  The suggested minimum age is 21.  Volunteers take part in a special interview and Hotline training.  Time Commitment:  Four hours weekly and a one-year commitment

MALE Center Front Desk and Outreach Volunteers 
The Men's Action Life Empowerment (MALE Center) is a community resource and wellness center for gay and bisexual men at 571 Columbus Ave. in Boston's South End that conducts outreach and a wide variety of other activities that promote health and community. 

The MALE Center is seeking Front Desk Volunteers available during the day to engage callers with in-depth screening conversations to determine which program or service is best for them.  Front Desk Volunteers are crucial to creating a welcoming atmosphere and helping people take the first steps toward utilizing the center.  A great position for those who enjoy counseling or direct service.  Time Commitment: 3 hours per week M-F, see http://www.malecenter.org/ for hours. 

In addition, the MALE Center is a base for Outreach volunteers, a group of peer advocates that go out together to bars and clubs one night per week to talk to guys about safer sex and distribute condoms and other materials. Time Commitment: Late night hours either Monday, Wednesday or Friday, and a six month commitment.  Click here to sign up.

Switchboard Volunteers: Wednesday or Thursday
Be a welcoming voice for callers to AIDS Action as a Switchboard volunteer at anytime on Wednesday and afternoons on Thursday.  Switchboard volunteers greet visitors and direct calls from people seeking services, donors and press to where they need to go.  Time Commitment is either: Wednesday 9am-1pm or  1-5pm.  Click here to apply.  

Check-In Volunteers
Offer a consistent and caring connection by phone for clients of AIDS Action.  Join a team of specially trained volunteers who provide long term, phone-based support for people living wtih HIV.  Help clients feel connected, provide emotional support, vital information and referrals, and develop relationships.  Volunteers take part in an interview and special Check-In training.   Time Commitment: Check-In volunteer hours are Tuesday or Wednesday from 6-9pm.  Volunteers make a one year commitment. Housing Group Volunteer
The Housing Advocacy program helps people living with HIV overcome barriers to achieve stable, affordable housing in Boston's difficult housing market.  This often involves many applications, and twice each week clients are invited to come in for 'housing group' to work on these applications and learn together.  The Housing program is looking for volunteers to help clients navigate this process.  Ideal for reliable people who enjoy working with others one-on-one. Time Commitment: Tuesdays 3-5pm or Thursdays 10am-Noon, for at least 3 months.  (Mark "administrative assistant" on application)  Click here to sign up.

Boomerangs Resale Store and Donation Center
Boomerangs, AIDS Action’s resale store and processing center in Jamaica Plain have volunteer opportunities to fit almost any schedule.  Help us sort donations at the processing center or organize and help customers at the store.  All proceeds go to AIDS Action.  And as a volunteer, you’ll never pay retail prices again!
Time Commitment: Volunteering for Boomerangs requires two hours weekly and a three-month commitment. Click here to sign up.

Event Volunteers
The AIDS Action Committee hosts events year round such as AIDS Walk Boston and Taste of the South End to raise awareness about HIV issues and raise money to support crucial programs.  Occassional volunteering at events is a great way for those with busy schedules to make an impact.  Time Commitment: 2-6 hours roughly once each season.  Click here to sign up.

Nutrition Works
This program is led by collaborating agencies, the Red Cross and the Boston Living Center.  Volunteers sort, pack and distribute nutritious foods to low income people living with HIV at a location near Back Bay Station.

Health Library Volunteers
Our Health Library serves as a valuable resource of up-to-date, user-friendly information.  It offers over 110 Enlish and Spanish-lanugage information packets on a wide range of health topics which are free for clients, providers, and staff.  The Health Library seeks volunteers to help keep this resouce at the ready by copying, binding and organizing materials.  Time Commitment: 2 or more hours per week during business hours, 2 month commitment.  Click here to sign up.

Legal Task Force
As an attorney, you can help people living with HIV maintain their affairs and exercise their legal rights. Join our group of volunteer attorneys who provide information and free legal services to our clients. Attorneys must be members of the Massachusetts Bar
Time Commitment:  Volunteers should be willing to accept two or more referrals per year.
