Hotlines: AIDS Action's first service in the fight against HIV/AIDS

Hotline HIV Icon"Hello. This is the AIDS Action Committee's Hotline. How may I help you?" Are these words familiar to you? Hotline volunteers have offered similar greetings to hundreds of thousands of callers for more than twenty five years.

In the very early 1980s, even before he founded AIDS Action Committee, Larry Kessler was one of the first people in Massachusetts to speak out publicly on AIDS. As a result, Larry began receiving phone calls at his home and business from people he didn't know looking for information about AIDS.

They were usually scared, sometimes sick, and often felt they had nowhere to turn. When the calls became too many for one person to handle, Larry sought funding from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to buy a 1-800 number and a few phones. In the summer of 1983, AIDS Action hotline volunteers began fielding their first calls. They've been answering those calls ever since.

Referrals

We have quick access to thousands of up-to-date local and national resources and make appropriate referrals as needed.  Many calls include referrals to HIV/STI/hepatitis testing sites, AIDS service and human service agencies, information or treatment hotlines, legal, financial, addiction, domestic violence, STI, physical or mental health care, and GLBT services, and support groups.

We can also help HIV+ callers get connected to the Client Services department within AIDS Action Committee.  Services offered through Client Services include case management, legal, financial, housing, and transportation assistance.

Make a difference: Volunteer!

Hotline volunteers support people in times of crisis and connect them to care. Potential volunteers must fill out a form and attend an orientation. Learn more.
