Still Here. Still Caring.

AIDS Action has a twenty-year history of serving people living with HIV and AIDS in the state of Massachusetts.  Our programs and services fall into three major categories, Client Services--which provides direct services to people living with HIV in Massachusetts; Prevention--which seeks to educate individuals about the spread of the virus; and Public Policy--which advocates on the state and national level for a broad range of policy issues around HIV and AIDS.  For more information about the programs and services of AIDS Action click on the links to the right or read below.

AIDS Action's Programs and Services

Client Services
Thousands of people receive direct services through the AIDS Action Committee’s Client Services department. While new medications are helping people to live longer, those who are infected still need access to a range of services including:

Prevention
The Prevention Department at AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts provides a range of prevention and education activities designed to reduce new HIV infections. We base our work on the following principles:

  • HIV prevention must be grounded in public health
  • HIV prevention must be targeted to specific populations
  • HIV prevention work with high risk populations is best achieved using harm reduction strategies
  • We think about individuals and populations
  • We focus on change over the long term
  • Prevention must be scientifically-based and research driven (and up-to-date)
  • Prevention must not be based in shame, guilt, or fear

Our programs work with many different communities, including gay men, communities of color, women, and youth.

Public Policy and Advocacy

AIDS Action Committee believes in advocating for fair and effective HIV/AIDS policy at the city, state and federal levels.  As advocates, we are focused on four major policy issues impacting HIV/AIDS below:

Prevention, Science & Ideology
Effective prevention and education for HIV/AIDS is often controversial.  In recent years, prevention has become more ideologically driven even though science-based prevention has been proven effective.

Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities and HIV
The HIV/AIDS epidemic affects some segments of the general population more than others.  We are committed to addressing health disparities throughout all of our work so that people who are being hit hardest by this disease receive the intervention, care, and services they need.

Privacy & Confidentiality
Privacy and confidentiality are fundamental concerns for everyone with health concerns, and particularly for people with HIV/AIDS in light of the stigma and taboo that continue to surround it.

Paying for it
A patchwork of public programs is available to help people with HIV/AIDS pay for their treatment.
