About AIDS Action Committee

Founded in 1983, AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts is a not-for-profit, community-based health organization whose mission is to stop the HIV/AIDS epidemic by preventing new infections and optimizing the health of those already infected.  Through a cooperative and mutually supportive effort between over 70 staff and hundreds of volunteers, AIDS Action seeks to assist and constructively work with people of all cultures by providing services, education, advocacy and prevention.

AIDS Action accomplishes our  mission by providing support services for people living with AIDS and HIV; educating the public and health professionals about how to prevent HIV transmission; and advocating for fair and effective AIDS policy at the city, state and federal levels.

The money raised at AIDS Walk Boston is the largest single source of funds for AIDS Action Committee. With the funds raised we are able to implement innovative programs that provide support services for people living with AIDS and HIV; educate the public and health professionals about how to prevent HIV transmission; and advocate for fair and effective AIDS policy at the city, state and federal levels. The $ 1.1 million raised by AIDS Walk Boston 2009 helped AIDS Action to do the following:

  • Provide free, confidential services to 2,500 clients with an average income of $8,604
  • Help 244 clients find stable housing and 593 clients avoid eviction
  • Grant emergency rental assistance and seasonal utility assistance to 1,050 clients
  • Administer nearly 800 HIV tests at AAC's MALE Center, Boston's only evening and Saturday location for free, confidential HIV rapid-testing, an increase of 74% over last year
  • Educate more than 400,000 people with targeted and public prevention messages
  • Answer 7,500 calls on our Statewide HIV/AIDS Hepatitis C and Sexual Health hotlines
  • Reach more than 8,000 youth through the BE SAFE program
  • Facilitate peer support groups and counseling sessions attended by nearly 1,500 individuals
  • Provide free legal services to our clients on over 1,000 legal matters
  • Give clients over 2,700 rides to medical and mental health appointments
  • Offer clients over 1,200 hours of mental health counseling
