March 10, 2010

The 2010 National STD Prevention Conference, held in Atlanta, Georgia, is releasing new findings on the rates of HIV and syphilis among gay men. March 10th: National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Every 35 minutes a woman tests positive for HIV in the United States. It's time to get tested.Wednesday, March 10, 2010 is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Nearly 1 in 4 Americans living with HIV today are women, and HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death among African-American women aged 25-34.

AIDS Action’s Healing Our Community Collaborative (HOCC) held a special session of its monthly luncheon program for women infected with, affected by and at risk for HIV/AIDS to honor this important day. For more information about HOCC, contact Heidi Bright at hbright@aac.org or (617) 285-7755). Click here to view the flyer for the event.

To learn more about women and HIV/AIDS, visit www.womenshealth.gov/hiv. There you will find easy-to-understand, reliable information about women’s risk factors for HIV, prevention methods and more.

Stories from the people we serve

aacdotorg_stories_jack.JPGDiagnosed with HIV in 2006, Jack was recently laid off after 26 years with the same company, losing his salary, benefits, and his sense of identity.

Worst of all, Jack was worried that he wouldn’t be able to stay on his medication without his benefits – he was confused, frightened and very worried.

Read the rest of Jack's story and others here.
