Welcome to Scott's Page!
Some would say that what I'm doing is crazy and, well, they still do. But, everyday after a full day of work, I head over to the gym, put on my shoes, stretch and grab my bottle of fancy flavored performance water before I jump on the treadmill. I've never run a marathon before so I'm kinda learning as I go.
It's interesting to see people's expressions when they found out you're running a marathon. Many are greatly impressed that you're even considering it while others are a bit passe about it and congratulate you.
Regardless of what they think, I've always held marathon runners in high regard. 20+ miles is a grueling task not many intentionally put themselves through; in fact, not many can even begin to image what it's like. I, myself, have really just started to learn what is involved with running a marathon. So, you ask, why do it? Where does one's motivation come from to run a marathon? To be honest, it started out as a personal goal; a challenge. But, as I learned more about how to run and why others run, I realized there was the potential to make this mean so much more; not only to me, but also the one's that I care about. See, I recently found out one of my dearest friends tested positive for HIV. My immediate reaction was sympathetic but at the same time supportive...I knew a little bit about what lay ahead of him since, a few years earlier, another close friend of mine also tested positive. After a few months of training, we had our first official marathon runners' meeting to talk about our goals for this marathon and what it meant to us. Well, for me, instead of being just a personal goal, my thoughts shifted toward this being an opportunity. I decided to dedicate my run to the support of my friends, their loved ones, and others who have been affected by HIV and AIDS. After communicating with AIDS Action, a FABULOUS local charity located in the Boston area dedicated to the support of survivors of HIV/AIDS, I have started raising funds to donate this charity.
The different ways you can join this cause are by donating directly to AIDS Action or by pledging to support my run. All proceeds, of course, will be given to AIDS Action to help fund their programs.
Your support is both welcomed and appreciated! See you April 17!
